I’m a registered high school teacher. Across four years in the classroom, four years as a teacher aide, and two years tutoring privately, I’ve worked with students who were coasting, students who were stuck, and plenty who were quietly doing far better thinking than their marks suggested.

The pattern I keep seeing is this: the student isn’t the problem. The fit is. A task sheet written in dense academic English, a concept introduced three units ago and never revisited, a revision method nobody was ever actually taught — these are fixable. What they need is someone with the time to find the specific gap and the training to build the specific bridge.

That’s the work. I bring a teacher’s understanding of how curriculum and assessment really function — how a criteria sheet, a rubric, or a university marking guide is actually applied — and I use it to design a program around one student. Not a worksheet packet. A plan, with goals, and a written record of whether it’s working.

That understanding isn’t limited to one system. I’ve taught across all three main International Baccalaureate programmes — the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP) — around two years of IB teaching in total, including MYP Design across MYP Years 2, 3 and 5, and DP Digital Society. Being fluent in both the Australian Curriculum and the IB matters more than it sounds: it’s the difference between a tutor who can follow your child’s school and one who can’t.

International Baccalaureate

Two systems, one student.

The IB calls it “Design”; the Australian Curriculum calls it “Design and Technologies”. Same thinking, different naming and different assessment logic — so a student moving between the two systems, or sitting in one while their family knows the other, doesn’t have to translate it themselves.

There’s a clear through-line across both systems: MYP Design → DP Digital Society → Australian Curriculum Design and Technologies / Digital Technologies. PYP experience is programme-level — the PYP is transdisciplinary, so it shapes how I teach inquiry rather than a subject I taught.

International students

Students doing demanding coursework while still building academic English are doing two hard jobs at once. I teach the subject and the language of the subject together — vocabulary, question stems, and what markers are really asking for — so strong thinking stops getting lost in translation.

The IB is taught in international schools worldwide, and I’ve taught inside it. If your family has moved between systems — or is about to — that transition is one I already know the shape of.

Four years as a teacher aide taught me how to adjust a task without lowering the bar. We work with how your student processes, organises, and shows what they know — and I’ll liaise with the school so the same adjustments follow them into the classroom.

MYP Design, DP Digital Society, and the IB framework more generally — inquiry-based learning, criterion-referenced assessment, and what an MYP 1–8 or DP 1–7 grade actually asks a student to demonstrate. Design and Digital Society are where I teach the content; across other IB subjects it’s the assessment and study-skills coaching that transfers.
